TELANGIECTASIA
(THREAD VEINS)

Telangiectasia refers to the appearance of small, dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin or mucous membranes. These visible vessels can appear as red, purple, or blue lines, often resembling spider webs or tree branches. Commonly called “spider veins,” telangiectasia can occur anywhere on the body but is most frequently seen on the face (often around the nose, cheeks and chin), legs, or chest.

While telangiectasia is usually harmless and doesn’t cause any significant medical problems, it can be a cosmetic concern for many individuals. In some cases, it may also be associated with other underlying health conditions.

Telangiectasia can develop for various reasons, including:

1. Genetics: Some people are genetically predisposed to developing telangiectasia, particularly those with a family history of the condition.

2. Aging: As we age, the skin loses collagen and elasticity, and blood vessels may become more fragile, making telangiectasia more common.

3. Sun Exposure: Prolonged or intense sun exposure can damage blood vessels, leading to the formation of telangiectasia, especially on the face.

4. Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy, menopause, or the use of birth control pills can cause hormonal shifts that contribute to the development of telangiectasia.

5. Chronic Medical Conditions: Certain conditions, such as rosacea, scleroderma, or liver disease, can cause telangiectasia as a symptom.

6. Trauma or Injury: Any trauma that damages blood vessels near the skin surface can lead to telangiectasia, such as after a surgery or significant physical injury.

7. Medications: Some medications, including topical steroids or drugs that dilate blood vessels, may trigger the development of visible blood vessels on the

Dr Chowdhury will inspect your skin during the consultation and confirmed the diagnosis before attempting to treat it. He won't perform the treatment if he doesn't deem it is safe to do so. A topical numbing cream may be applied to numb the skin and minimise discomfort during treatment.
