SPIDER NAEVI

Spider naevi (also known as spider angiomas or spider veins) are small, red or purple vascular lesions that appear on the skin. It is given that name because it has a central red papule (the body of the 'spider') from which fine red lines (the spider legs) extend radially. An alternative explanation for the name explains that the red lines form a spider-like network. Other names for spider Naevi are spider angioma (a misnomer), spider telangiectasia and naevus araneus. These lesions are often harmless and are commonly found on the face, neck, or upper chest but can appear on other parts of the body as well.

Spider naevi occur when small blood vessels (capillaries) just beneath the surface of the skin become dilated or enlarged.

A solitary spider telangiectasis is common in children and adults, affecting 10–15% of the population. Although they can affect people of any race, spider Naevi are more easily seen in fair skin compared to skin of colour. While the exact cause isn’t always clear, several factors are associated with the development of multiple spider naevi, including:

  • Hormonal changes: Pregnancy, birth control pills, or hormone replacement therapy can trigger the appearance of spider naevi due to changes in estrogen levels  and thyrotoxicosis.

  • Liver disease: Conditions such as cirrhosis or hepatitis can lead to spider naevi as the liver’s ability to process hormones is impaired.

  • Sun exposure: Prolonged exposure to the sun can increase the likelihood of developing spider naevi, particularly on the face.

  • Genetics: Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to developing spider naevi.

Treatment of Spider Naevi are considered cosmetic and are not available on the NHS.  At Astounding Skin Aesthetics we understand the discomfort and self-consciousness that these Spider Veins can cause, especially on the face. That's why we offer fast and painless removal using electrosurgery with Hyfrecator.

The procedure is quick and straight forward with no downtime and is unlikely to leave a scar. We pride ourselves on delivering exceptional care and achieving excellent results.

Dr Chowdhury will inspect your skin during the consultation and confirmed the diagnosis before attempting to treat it. He won't perform the treatment if he doesn't deem it is safe to do so. A topical numbing cream may be applied to numb the skin and minimise discomfort during treatment.
